Individual Reporting for Reconse... Case Analysis...

A. Identify 3 Moral Determinants are:
Traditional common sense morality involves
three moral determinants,
three factors that influence whether
a specific act is morally good or bad.

  • the act itself, (what did you do?)
  • the situation(s) surrounding the act, (where, when, how and to whom did you do it?)
  • the intention behind the act.(why did you do it?)

B. What is your moral position in the case? Explain Why?

C. Apply the Ten Commandments...

Case 1

Therese, a young lady whose parents are separated, stays with her mother and a stepfather. Her stepfather takes care of her needs. Therese was forewarned not to engage in a romantic relationship with any guy until she is able to finish college. Non-compliance to this rule would mean termination of financial support for her studies. Unknown to her mother and stepfather, Therese got herself involved win a relationship with a rich businessman. After some months in the relationship, she found herself to be pregnant. When the boyfriend got to know about it, he just decided to abandon her. Afraid of the consequences of her actions, she wants to have an abortion. What moral evaluation can you give in this kind of situation?

Case 2

Lawrence came from a financially disadvantaged family from the North. Being a scholar, he expects himself to graduate with honors. After the final exams, he obtained a failing mark in one of his final exams which may have serious repercussions to his final grades and may disqualify him from getting the highest academic award. He went to his professor to discuss the issue. The professor’s reason was unjust and inconsiderate. The professor was willing to make some concessions under one condition to go out with him and give him some sexual favors. If you were Lawrence, what would you do in that situation?

Case 3

A college teenage girl was experiencing fear and is troubled about how her parents will react if they will find out that she is pregnant. She has not attending her classes for months, as her pregnancy was already beginning to show. She decided to tell her older sister about it. Her sister told her to have the baby aborted. Her other sister soon learned about her being pregnant and immediately told their father. The father then asked her to leave the house immediately and not to come back anymore. If you were in her case, what will you do?

Case 4

Dr. Freeman, the Dean of the College of the Holy Cross was preparing for the 2nd level accreditation. He asked his friend, Mr. Sullivan to be a part of his faculty. During the second semester, Dr. Freeman appointed Mr. Sullivan as the chair of the English department. Mr. Sullivan was aware that one must have three years of teaching experience before one can qualify for the said appointment. If you were Dr. freeman, will you consider “friendship” as a basis of promoting your subordinates without necessarily considering the school’s requirements? And if you were Mr. Sullivan, will you consider the offer of your friend?

Case 5

Dona Lucia, a ninety-eight year old woman is experiencing a traumatic heart failure and is confined in the ICU. Her favorite daughter, Beatriz, who has been regularly visiting her, suddenly died of heart attack. The family thought that telling their mother about this ad news might worsen her condition and might eventually cause her death. After some days, Dona Lucia started to feel depressed because she has not been seeing Beatriz. The family and the hospital staff gathered to discuss what to do about the situation. Do you think it is morally permissible to conceal the truth from Dona Lucia? Answer with a yes or no, and defend you case.

Case 6

A pilot, transporting 231 passengers in an Airbus from Bahrain was not allowed to land at the Ninoy International Airport (NAIA) because the runway was blocked due to President Arroyo’s scheduled flight to Davao to attend a wedding where she is to stand as a sponsor. Prioritizing the President’s flight is said to have been a protocol. Considering that the plane’s fuel was running low already, the pilot of the airbus could no longer delay his landing, so he decided to reroute to Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA), Clark Field, Pampanga to refuel his plane. The pilot failed to inform the authorities about his rerouting, thus his plane was declared to be missing. The plane landed safely at DMIA, but it has caused the passengers, their relatives, and the officials of NIAA to be frantic and worried about the situation. Is there moral justification for the abovementioned protocol for the president? How will you reconcile this protocol with emergency situations, like in the above given example?

Case 7

Pinoy Big Brother has earlier announced that for its summer season the viewers could participate in determining the winners through text-votation. Yet the producer of the show decided to choose winners whom he perceives would later suit the company’s interest. The viewers questioned the result asking why the producer changed the mechanics and rules of the contest in the middle of the game. The producer defends his position claiming that such a decision has always been a part of the game the industry has been trying to play. Encouraging people to vote via text means income for the network just as going after potential movie personalities is the additional benefits to the network. Is it ethically justified to conceal the real intentions of the producers just to create a market for a particular show or product? Answer this with a yes or not, and defend your position.

Case 8

The Browns, a couple in their 40’s, have two daughters who are already in high school. Considering that she could find more free time for herself, Mrs. Brown decided to finish her studies in college in order to earn a degree in Business Administration. Her husband, for his part, decided to avail of his semi-retirement. After several months of being in their new situation, they found out that Mrs. Brown was 12 weeks pregnant. For sure this would force her to give up her goal of finishing her studies. Unwilling to see herself in such predicament she then thought of having an abortion. Besides, she also felt that she was already old enough to have one. Her husband detested the idea and expressed his willingness to spend his time taking care of the baby. Would you agree with Mrs. Brown or with Mr. Brown? Why?

Patrolman Charlie Hanger arrested Timothy McVeigh who was seen in the crime scene using an unregistered vehicle. While being arrested, an unregistered pistol was found in his car. After spending two years imprison, McVeigh was sentenced to death for his alleged role in the bombing. Do you think the evidence presented against McVeigh were enough to sentence him to death? Even if it was not, do you think death penalty can be morally correct to enforce justice, peace and order in the community?

Case 10

Jack was devastated when he learned that he is infected with HIV virus because of the blood transfusion that he had to undergo in the hospital. Jack is happily married with his wife Jenny who has been very supportive of him, even after learning about his health condition. They have three children who are still in their tender age. His doctor told Jack that it is possible for him to carry on with his normal activities even for years and that the virus could be put under control through very good drugs. In order to keep the relationship with his wife sustained, the doctor suggested to the couple to use condom during sexual intercourse so as to prevent the transfer of HIV to the partner. On Mrs. Peralta’s 2nd Ceasarean Section, her obstetrician discovered her uterus to be too “thin”. The doctor consulted Mr. Peralta about the possibility of a hysterectomy that would solve the couples’ problem. The possibility of not having any more children in the future astounded Mr. Peralta.

His only complaint in life is a persistent toothache that seems incurable. One of his sons told him to seek another dentist opinion.

Mr. Eleazar went to Manila and did as advised. His dentist, Dr. de Castro discovered that the cause of Mr. Eleazar’s problem was an error on the part of the previous dentist.

Mr. Delacruz underwent a yearly executive medical check up, in a well -known hospital in Makati. He is 50 years old and a businessman. Until recently, his business is in danger of bankruptcy as a result of the US economic crisis.

While he was resting in his hospital suite, he was informed by his doctor that a visitor wants to talk to him. The visitor related the story of a 25-year- old American scientist working on genetic engineering about to make an astounding discovery that will cure many of the diseases that plagued humankind. Unfortunately the genius became very sick and is in need of a kidney to prolong his life. The genius has a unique blood and tissue type and hence cannot just accept any kidney from any donor. The doctors of the genius were searching for almost a year for a compatible donor. Fortunately the blood and tissue type of Mr. Delacruz is a perfect matched the genius. Mr. Delacruz was offered one million pesos for one of his kidneys.

If Mr. Delacruz does not accept the offer, the young doctor will die. And with his death, the prospects of the cures for the diseases that plagues humankind will die with him. If he accepts the offer, loosing one kidney will inevitably shorten his life span. He will not also be able to engage in strenuous physical activity, like camping, mountain climbing and hunting. But he needs the money to save his business from bankruptcy.

If you were Mr. Delacruz, will you accept the offer? Elaborate your answer.

If it passes, it will add a new constitutional amendment to the California Constitution that will have the following text: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” The ballot title for the measure says that Prop.8 “eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Mr. Zandro had just received certification of his 20 year- term of office as a regular employee at an early age. His

full- term will end in September. Knowing himself as still strong and energetic and can still perform his task as a clerk, he talked to his superior to recommend him as contractual before his full term ends in which his superior agreed verbally. After a month, to Mr. Zandro’s surprise, he received a memo on his table that that same day his connection with the company ended. That Mr. Yazon will take his place right at that very moment.

If you were Mr. Zandro, could you hold on to your superior’s verbal agreement? Are there some moral/ethical principles that the superior had missed? What could be some legal/laws that would address to this issue?

Case 18

Henry is in a position to influence the selection of suppliers for the large volume of equipment that his firm purchases each year. At Christmas time, he usually receives small tokens from several salesmen, ranging from inexpensive ballpoint to a bottle of liquor. This year, however, one salesman sends an expensive briefcase stamped with Harry’s initials. Should Henry accept the gift? Should he take any further course of action?

Case 19

An engineering firm designed a flood control project for the temporary retention of storm water in a nearby city.

Included in the project were some high reinforced concrete retaining walls to support the earth at the sides of the retention basin. Although the consulting engineer has nor responsibility for site visits or inspection, one of the designers decided o visit the site, using part of his lunch hour to see how it was progressing. He found that the retaining wall footings had been poured and the wall forms were placed. He was shocked, however, to find that the reinforcing steel extended from the footings into the walls only a small fraction of the specified distance. He immediately returned to his office and the client was notified of the situation. The inspectors responsible were disciplined and corrective measures taken with respect to the steel reinforcement. There is no question that in the first heavy rain the walls would have collapsed had the designer not discovered this fault. The result would have been heavy property loss, waste of resources, environment damage and possible injury, even loss of life.

Do you think this particular designer acted correctly when he informed the client of the situation right away? Or, as a Filipino, should you do otherwise?

Case 20

Ria, a 17-year-old 1st year college student have been nurturing ill-treatment towards her mother. Ria grew up with her grandmother. For 15 years of separation, her mother being an OCW, returned home for good. Since Ria spent all her life with her grandmother she had developed independency and alienation from her mother. Even though her mother tries to establish bonding with her, Ria always denies her attempts. To further show her disregard to her mother, she hooked herself into vices, like smoking, drinking hard liquors and so on. To make matters worse, she is getting into premarital sex with her boyfriend, and this was happening since she was in high school.

Do you consider Ria’s behavior as ethically and morally acceptable in the Philippine context? Would you recommend parents, particularly mothers, to work as OCW’s, leaving their little children behind in the care of other significant adults?
